Soil hydrology in the Earth system

چکیده

Soil hydrological processes (SHP) support ecosystems, modulate the impact of climate change on terrestrial systems and control feedback mechanisms between water, energy biogeochemical cycles. However, land-use changes extreme events are increasingly impacting these processes. In this Review, we describe SHP across scales examine their links with soil properties, ecosystem climate. structure influences such as infiltration, water redistribution root uptake small scales. On local scales, driven by uptake, vegetation groundwater dynamics. Regionally, impacted droughts, floods, heatwaves change; however, antecedent current partially determine broader effects events. Emerging technologies wireless automated sensing, moisture observation through novel synthetic aperture radars satellites, big data analysis machine learning approaches offer unique opportunities to advance hydrology. These advances, in tandem inclusion more key types properties models, will be pivotal predicting role during global change. hydrology impacts functioning is being altered anthropogenic activities. This Review discusses drivers processes, feedbacks within Earth emerging tools illuminating linkages.

Explicitly representing soil microbial processes in Earth system models

Microbes influence soil organic matter decomposition and the long-term stabilization of carbon (C) in soils. We contend that by revising the representation of microbial processes and their interactions with the physicochemical soil environment, Earth system models (ESMs) will make more realistic global C cycle projections. Explicit representation of microbial processes presents considerable cha...

Intercomparison of Soil Hydrology Modules in the MIT

The availability of water at or near the surface determines the way incident radiative energy is partitioned at the ground surface. The goal of this thesis is to determine if better hydrological representation in the MIT Integrated Global System Model will improve its climate prediction capability. This thesis compares the performances of the hydrological modules in the MIT Climate Model and th...

Review and Classification of Modeling Approaches of Soil Hydrology Processes

To use soil hydrology processe (SHP) models, which have increasingly extended during the last years, comprehensive knowledge about these models and their modeling approaches seems to be necessary. The modeling approaches can be categorized as either classical or non-classical. Classical approaches mainly model the SHP through solving the general unsaturated flow (Richards) equation, numerically...
